Guy Fleming Trail
The Guy Fleming Trail is a relatively level 2/3-mile loop along the ocean bluffs in Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, and State Parks calls it the easiest trail in the reserve. It passes two overlooks with wide ocean views, sandstone formations and the reserve's greatest variety of wildflowers, ferns and cacti. Like every main reserve trail, it is closed until about March 1, 2027.
Guy Fleming Trail at a Glance
Where It Starts
The trailhead is near the top of the park road, a short walk from the Lodge. State Parks' infosheet suggests it as the one-hour visit: start at the visitor center and walk down to the loop. The State Parks trail guide lists drinking water and parking for this trail.
What You'll See
The loop runs through Torrey pines and along the bluff edge. State Parks says it has more wildflowers, ferns and cacti than any other trail in the reserve, with the most color in spring. The two overlooks face the ocean, and in winter the bluffs are a good place to watch for migrating gray whales.
Who Guy Fleming Was
Guy Fleming was a botanist with the San Diego Society of Natural History. In 1916 he reported that heavy public use was damaging the trees, and in 1921 Ellen Browning Scripps and the City Park Commission made him custodian of Torrey Pines Reserve. Read more in the reserve's history.
Before You Go
- No food in the reserve; water is fine.
- No dogs, bikes or drones.
- Stay on the trail; the bluff edges crumble.
Good For / Maybe Skip If
Good for: first visits, families, and anyone who wants ocean views without a climb.
Maybe skip if: you want to reach the sand; take the Beach Trail instead.
