Visitor Center (the Lodge)

The Torrey Pines Lodge is the visitor center of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve: a pueblo-style building put up in 1923 as a restaurant, now a small museum with exhibits on the reserve's wildlife, plants, geology and history. It sits at the top of the park road beside the trailheads. State Parks lists it as closed until March 2027 for the reserve construction project.

What's Inside

State Parks describes exhibits on local wildlife, flowers and geology, including a collection of mounted native animals, a video about the reserve and a small shop with souvenirs and interpretive books. Free trail maps are handed out here when the reserve is open. A native plant garden grows in front of the building.

Guided Walks

Volunteer docents of the Torrey Pines Docent Society lead nature walks from the Lodge on weekends and holidays when the reserve is open. Check torreypine.org for the schedule; State Parks lists other programs, such as Junior Ranger days, on its events calendar.

Accessibility

State Parks rates the visitor center as generally accessible. The accessible route goes around the side of the building to the north door, and some help may be needed with slopes and thresholds. One captioned video is available. Two accessible parking spaces are next to the Lodge in the east lot. The current construction adds an accessible path from the upper lot to the new restroom and the Lodge.

History

The building opened in 1923 as a restaurant on the old coast road. Read how the reserve came to be in About Torrey Pines.

Not the Hotel

"The Lodge at Torrey Pines" is a private resort hotel by the Torrey Pines golf course, not the reserve's visitor center. This site has no connection to it.
